How long does a modeling career last?
Q. I am looking to model in the high fashion industry. I am planning on going on America's Next Top Model but I am wondering if it would be possible to go to college before I begin my career. I know that the career doesn't last forever and that is why I would like to go to college so that way I could get another job once I am too old to model. If you could tell me how long a modeling career lasts in the high fashion industry. Any additional information would be appreciated. Thank you.

A. This is something that I happen to be an expert at because I am a model and so is my fiancee. Your best bet when starting out is to join an agency. * Make sure you do your research though, because some agencies are very good and others are very poor. * Also do be prepared to be asked to pose in skimpy and revealing clothing. Sometimes you will also be asked to pose nude. If you are uncomfortable with your body or don't like being nude or semi nude, this is not a good choice for a career. As far as how long your career will last is really up to you. You have to take care of your self by eating healthy, exercising, and having an over all healthy life style. There are models like Christie Brinkley who have been in the business for decades.… [cont.]

What is the best modeling clay to use to make small models?
Q. I am making a DNA model and it is due on Monday, it is not going to be a big model, probably 10 or 12 inches tall, what is the best modeling clay to use for a model like this? Easy to sculpt, but sturdy enough not to melt off.

A. Super Sculpey ceramic like sculpting compound. (hardens in low temp oven). You can get it at hobby stores. or on line. they come in 1lb. boxes. there is white, which seems to be a lot more pliable than the flesh colored. they're under 10 dollars last time i checked. hope this helps

Models and Photographers, what are the average modeling rates?
Q. I am looking for somebody who knows what they are talking about, not a smart ass kid. What are fair rates to charge a photographer for different types of modeling? I am 24, very fit, experienced, and professional. I am just tired of playing the guessing game with different photographers, I want to set solid rates. Thanks!

A. There is no such thing as solid rates. The rates will be determined by their usage. The same exact photo session can command vastly different rates based on a wide variety of factors. Some of which is the client. The prominence of the person in the shoot, The distribution, The longevity of the ad, whether or not there is a buy out, whether or not the is ad is exclusive. The market it is used for and there are many more factors. For example: We used people in the background for a VW spot. These pictures were only going in a catalog. The price we paid was $2500 dollars for the day. Now if these same exact pictures were going to be used in an billboard the rates would of been closer to $20,000 per day. If these pictures were created to… [cont.]

Q. I want to know what type of book modeling agencies use to present pictures of their models to potential customers.

A. none are probably exactly the same, but most reputable agencies follow the same ways: -the models' zedcards are displayed at the agency, usually on visible, eye level shelves so the client/agents can see all the models, and take some cards with them if interested. -there are also shelves with the models books (each model has two books, one for herself, and another one at the agency). these books are shelved like library books, with the model's name on it's spine. books are usually 9x14. -most agencies also have the models portfolio online. some are accessible to the public, others you have to have a client login. -if model has had a nice campaign or tearsheet, they are usually framed and displayed at the agency, sometimes blown up. … [cont.]

A. Okay slow down there deary! The first step to modeling is getting with a agency. They will get your face out there and get you to castings. But anyone in the industry knows that it takes time. Once your with a agency, you will have to begin to put your portfolio together. Once that's started your agency will print you cards to give out when on castings. The cards have pictures of you on them, your stats, the agency address and the likes. And your career will slowly progress from there. I just started modeling in January, so if you want tips or advice or something like that email me at taylorcornwell@yahoo.com Good luck! xoTaylor

How do I obtain modeling and acting permits for a child in NY state?
Q. Are there any parents of the child actors / models out there? I would love to know what the exact process of obtaining both modeling and acting work permits for a child in NY state (I do realize that there might be slight differences in a process from state to state. I need it in NY). Who do I contact to request it? Does it involve Labor Department? How long does it take to get one? How complicated the whole process is? Please share your knowledge and experience!

A. If your child is signed with an agency in NY, they will sort out the permits for you. If they don't, find another agency. It should be part of their standard contract.

What is the fastest way to start off your modeling career if you are currently not a model and at a young age?
Q. I have a younger sister that is younger than 18, and she wants to be a supermodel when she grows up. But she doesn't know how to start it off. She lives in a small area, no where near a modeling agency, and has no idea what is in store for her if she becomes one. she spends some time taking pictures of herself and putting on make-up "practicing" her "modeling talent." and pretending to be a model.

A. there arent any. agencies arent that specific. modeling swimwear requires you be a fashion model, and you would not only model around water, or in bathing suits. you have to fit the height, weight, size and measurement requirements fashion models do. p.s. roxy is not an agency, its a brand. you cant just contact them and ask if you can model for them. they go through professional agencies like elite, ford, etc and require you be a fashion model- at least 5'9, size 2 or 4, super longs legs, all-american look, etc

What is the word used for a fit model used in showrooms in the modeling / fashion industry?
Q. There is a word/term used in the modeling / fashion industry that refers to a model of a specific size who can be used for certain jobs because they fit a certain size criteria. I am explaining this pooly. I cannot think of the word/term and it is driving me insane. If a model is "this" they can work in the showroom and model for the designers and the buyers because they fit this size criteria. For male models, they have to be a 40 Reg, for instance. Words/terms it is NOT: fit model average standard mannequin size Here's another weird thing about this: this term ALSO is used to define the clothing a stylist pulls from a showroom for a shoot. Does anyone know what I am talking about? One person told me they think it starts with a "P"… [cont.]

A. I'm not sure about the specific word you're looking to find, but we use the term 'fit model' regularly in the industry. The proportions for a fit model vary from company to company. A fit model is someone who represents the average measurements for the target customer of an apparel line. Patterns are cut based on the fit models measurements, he or she is used to fit mock-ups before the samples are produced. Obviously, sizes can vary greatly, depending on the company's need. For instance, a line catering to an older, Missy sized consumer would use a fit model with completely different measurements than a line with a younger, junior based customer. You may find job listings or more info. in the classified section of Women's Wear Daily,… [cont.]

A. Check out www.newmodels.com for information on how the Modeling industry works. This is not an agency or school website. It is an independent site written by an industry professional who doesn't want people to be scammed. The more you know, the better choices you can make about whether you want to do modeling or not, and how to start. Also, since you are so young & a minor, I recommend your parents read the site too so they can help you. :) good luck!

A. If you're talking about the models they use at car shows and other events, do a google search for "promotional models" or "event models" or "trade show models" in San Francisco to get names of agencies. These type of agencies will often advertise on sites like Craigs List.

A. If you're talking about the models they use at car shows and other events, do a google search for "promotional models" or "event models" or "trade show models" in San Francisco to get names of agencies. These type of agencies will often advertise on sites like Craigs List.

How can I start modeling and making a portfolio?
Q. Modeling has always been my dream and I really want to start. I'm serious about it too, and I want to try it. People think I'm attractive too, so I have that factor. I'm 14 years old, 5'8 and still growing a lot. I weigh about 106 lbs and I have a small frame. I'm just naturally thin and small. How do I start making a portfolio? Do I have to have one to sign up with an agency? Thanks!

A. To start out as a model and to get you photographes to a modeling or talent agency you will need a few snapshots. l head shot, l body shot, l 3/4 shot and they do not have to be professional photos. Submit photos to agencies, call the local modeling and talent agencies in you area, email photos to the modeling agency women's board, send photos in postal mail if they have an open call - when they see new faces at the agency then plan to go to it and have the agents meet with you in person always include you height, age, sizes, phone, if you go to school and email address. If the agency is interested in you they will get in contact with you from one of the contact numbers or email you sent to them. you can check in with the agency after a… [cont.]

A. you can find open calls yourself. look in your phone book for community theaters. look in the classified ads and the entertainment section of your newspaper. for anything of a commercial nature you will need to get out of michigan. agents don't do open calls. most open calls are non paid rolls, agents make no money if you don't. you will need a parent to make this happen for you and get you an agent.

what marketing materials should i bring to a modeling and talent agency?
Q. I have a meeting with a modeling agency in a week or so. I'm just starting out so the only pictures I have are unprofessionally done photos. She asked me to bring any marketing material I have. I don't want to go in without anything, but then I don't know what kind of marketing material I could bring since none of my pictures were done professionally. Any advice?

A. Marketing materials means photos, demo reels, headshots, etc. For modeling, you just need to bring a few pictures (non-profesional is fine) - at least one headshot, one profile headshot and one full body shot in either fitted clothing or a swimsuit. Write your name and contact info on the back in case they ever get separated from your application. If you are looking for representation as an actress you need to bring a professional headshot (amateur won't cut it in this case), your resume and your demo reel (2-3 minutes of acting work you've done on a CD-Rom/DVD). If you don't have this, you are in no way ready to be represented by a talent agency for acting - these are the minimum requirements for any agent to consider you.
