Liverpool (pronounced /ˈlɪvərpuːl/) is a city and metropolitan borough of Merseyside, England, along the eastern side of the Mersey Estuary. It was founded as a borough in 1207 and was granted city status in 1880. Liverpool has a population of 435,500, and lies at the centre of the wider Liverpool Urban Area, which has a population of 816,216. Historically a part of Lancashire, the urbanisation and expansion of Liverpool were broadly brought about by the city's status as a major port. By the 18th century, trade from the West Indies, Ireland and mainland Europe coupled with close links with the Atlantic Slave Trade furthered the economic expansion of Liverpool. By the early 19th century, 40% of the world's trade passed through Liverpool's docks, contributing to Liverpool's rise as a major city. Inhabitants of Liverpool are referred to as Liverpudlians but are also known as "Scousers", in reference to the local dish known as "scouse", a form of stew. The word "Scouse" has also become synonymous with the Liverpool accent and dialect. Liverpool's status as a port city has contributed to its diverse population, which draws from a wide range of peoples, cultures, and religions, particularly those from Ireland. The popularity of The Beatles and the other groups from the Merseybeat era contributes to Liverpool's status as a tourist destination; tourism forms a significant part of the city's modern economy. In 2007 the city celebrated its 800th anniversary, and in 2008 it held the European Capital of Culture title together with Stavanger, Norway. In 2004, several areas throughout the city centre were granted World Heritage Site status by UNESCO. Referred to as the Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City, the site comprises six separate locations in the city including the Pier Head, Albert Dock and William Brown Street and includes many of the city's most famous landmarks. Yes Liverpool port has less dockers working in it now than in its supposed hey day, and needs less docks but it has more cargo passing through it now than ever. The Seaforth container terminal and the Atlantic Conveyor carries more tonnage than all the dock network ever did, and the Atlantic Conveyor is turned around in less than 12 hours. When the new dock gates are fitted to Seaforth the bigger panamax ships will break more records on this route. Liverpool is the main UK port for cargo to and from the Americas especially the U.S. as well as being the main port for the import of cereals. Relationships with Cheshire are quite cordial, The Duke of Westminster who lives in Cheshire has just financed the multi billion… [cont.] Answered by Corneilius - Mon Oct 20 09:06:09 2008 How many times have Liverpool had a player sent off from opposing teams? Q. Interesting stat: Liverpool played in 9 games and won 8 of those. Man Utd in 2 games, Arsenal in 1 game and Chelsea 0. That's 3 times more than the combined total of their rivals. Should Man Utd, Arsenal, and Chelsea follow Liverpool's lead? And without the clear help of the refs, what will be the true standings? Starting from their undeserved victory at Everton last season: Phil Jageilka(Everton) Phil Neville(Everton) Marco Materazzi(Inter Milan) Jeremie Aliadiere(Middlesborough) Nicolas Burdisso(Inter) Nemanja Vidic(Man United) Antonio Valencia(Wigan) Pablo Zabaleta(Man City) Emmanuel Adebayor(Arsenal) Frank Lampard(Chelsea) Gabriel Heinze(Real Madrid) Nemanja Vidic(Man United) Brad Friedel(Aston Villa) Caleb Folan(Hull City) Altogether that makes 13 players sent off to date, and that doubles up Vidic against Liverpool. Most of the red cards were thanks to the dirty Anglo-Spanish American money Liverpool paid the refs. Q. I'm a Liverpool fan and have enjoyed their European success over the last few years. I'm just wondering what their odds are of winning England this year. I'm mostly just hoping they'll do so, but wanted to get this topic going. You'll never walk alone! Asked by Tex517 - Tue Oct 23 20:47:28 2007 - - 16 Answers - 0 Comments A.
