Should every department in a business be equally important?
Q. I work in a casino and the owner / general manager told my bosses that the department I work in is not as important as the other departments here. To prove his point he gave every department except the one I work in 50 cent raises. My department I work in is all war veterans from Vietnam, Korea and Iraq / Afghanistan. Is there anything I can do about this? Please help I definitely need help on this situation. The department all of my fellow war veterans work in is surveillance.

A. Your owner/manager is basing his decision on the amount of revenue each department generates. Apparently this is all that is important to him. He obviously does not consider he has any civic duty in being fair to all. After all, war veterans are important, they were busy fighting for their country whilst he was coining the money. He should realise that each department has its strengths and that to have a well rounded business, all are important. Not a lot you can do about this attitude because if you told him that I suspect you would soon be out of the door. Bide your time. If you are really discontented then quietly do your own research in looking for another job.

Q. Suppose that a department contains 8 men and 16 women. How many ways are there to form a committee with 6 members if it must have strictly more women than men?

A. The various forms the committee can take: WWW (one way) WWWM (6 ways -- the M can be in any one of six chairs) WWWMM) (15 ways) It cannot be 3W and 3 M (this would not be "strictly" more women) Then in each combo, count the ways that each chair can be filled: In the first case, from 16 women, pick 6 C(16, 6) = 16! / (6! 10!) = 8008 In the second case: From 16 women pick 5 and from 8 men pick one C(16,5)*C(8,1) = [16! / (5! 11!) ] * 8 In the third case: From 16 women pick 4 and from 8 men pick 2 C(16,4)*C(8,2) = [16! / (4! 12!) ] * [ 8! / (2! 6!) ] Add all three results. --- If the order is important (if the fact that a person is chosen for the 2nd chair instead of the 3rd chair makes a difference), then you'd have to worry about… [cont.]

How can I find out what department a specific sheriff works for?
Q. I need to find out where a sheriff works so I can contact his department. Is there a database that lists all sheriffs?

A. Like a poster indicated before, the blue code of silence will not help you get the information you need. Some ideas here may help (and this is what I would do): Google his name! Often staff comes up on those searches because they are listed in county webpages. Try diffferent search engines. Try doing an "intellius" search. His PD is going to be, more often than not, that of the town where you interacted with him. This means, he is a sheriff in Boston if that is where you dealt with him. It should help you narrow it down. To nail it, simply contact the Lieutenant on Duty at the station to help you confirm. I would not do anything via phone or talking, but put it in writing. By the way, every state and town employee's name and position… [cont.]
