A department store is a retail establishment which specializes in satisfying a wide range of the consumer's personal and residential durable goods product needs; and at the same time offering the consumer a choice multiple merchandise lines, at variable price points, in all product categories. Department stores usually sell products including apparel, furniture, home appliances, electronics, and additionally select other lines of products such as paint, hardware, toiletries, cosmetics, photographic equipment, jewelery, toys, and sporting goods. Certain department stores are further classified as discount department stores. Discount department stores commonly have central customer checkout areas, generally in the front area of the store. Department stores are usually part of a retail chain of many stores situated around a country or several countries.

What department store should I go to for makeup?
Q. I've finally given up trying to find the right foundation with the right shade. I think I'll actually save money by going into a department store and having someone help me find what will work. What store / brand should I shop for reasonable prices? (And please don't tell me AVON, lol!) Thanks for your help!

A. What store you go to really depends on what part of the country you're in, as department stores tend to be regional. Even the same company can have different names in different regions. That being said, most major department stores tend to carry the same few brands. Lancome I love them for their foundation. I still think it's probably the best department store brand you'll find. Have one of the counter workers help match your skin tone. Clinique I don't think they tend to be as good as Lancome when it comes to foundation, but they are excellent for color. So for lips, eyes, etc. I would definitely check them out. Estee Lauder Whether fair or not, Estee Lauder sort of has a reputation for being for older women, as opposed to… [cont.]

What exactly are department store, and why are they so bad?
Q. Commercials advertise that they are expensive. Would a store at the mall be a department store? How are they more expensive than other stores? Why are they so bad?
Asked by Andre The Giant - Wed May 10 16:46:10 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. They are the stores that "anchor" malls and have many different departments (hence the name.) Macy's and JC Penney are a couple of examples. Some are expensive, some aren't. The rent for a spot in the mall contributes to the prices of the goods a store sells. And competitors who are advertising that department stores are SO expensive are doing it to serve their own needs, namely getting you to shop with them instead. You have to take anything you hear in a commericial with a grain of salt and do your own comparison shopping.
