How much is this 1891 Hardcover Two Volume history book work?
Q. I have an original first edition set of The American Revolution by John Fisk (The Riverside Press, 1891). Does anyone have any way to estimate how much this set is worth on the open market. It seems the book is still being printed and new versions currently sell for around $40, I think? Any input would be appreciated...

A. I don't know about that specific book. You might seek identical books at AbeBooks.com or ebay, where asking price means nothing but amount bid suggests actual value. Now the bad news. Many older books that seem like they ought to be valuable aren t. Leather bound classics, in good condition, printed from the 1860s-1930s in the US are worth an average of about $2 - $3 each--if you can find a buyer. For many people finding a box of books in the attic or as part of grandma s things, owning old books is worth more than you could sell them for. While I would not be surprised if I were wrong, my guess is that you'd do well to get $10 for the set.

How much are stamped postcards from 1891 worth? How can I find out?
Q. The postcards were sent in and around Connecticut. (I live in Virginia now but still travel to CT.) On them are handwritten orders for horse and carriage supplies. I would like to find out how much they are possibly worth and/or who I can ask online or in Virginia about them. They are in pretty good condition.
Asked by DajaVu07 - Tue Dec 26 16:30:50 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Stamped postcards are interesting in that both the stamp and the postcard may have value. The best way to get an appraisal is to go to a stamp show or visit a series of stamp dealers and get their view as to the items' values. Different dealers may have different views on the values (based on their clientele) so you will get the best prices by visiting a couple (as opposed to just one).

Mahogany apothecary cabinets frm South Africa 1891, how do I find out their history?
Q. Friends of ours owned the store and their Great grandfather purchased these cabinets. All they know is they are from South Africa (or the wood is) and he opend the store in 1891. He also bought Tiffany stained glass windows that same year. How did he find these amazing cases?
Asked by Me - Wed Apr 19 19:59:13 2006 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Your best bet is to take them to a professional appraiser. Without tons of pictures, it's impossible to authenticate any aspect of the tables, i.e. where & when they were made. If you check the inside and underside of the cabinets, and you can see strongly made joints, that is a good sign. As an example, certain 19th century South African "Bookcases range between $425 and $1,250", so if in good condition they could be worth quite a bit.

A. I don't know why hunting questions get answered by jackasses in the first few answers. Online, some gun stores and some sporting goods stores. $80-$120 depending on where you look and what your getting. You used to be able to get them for $60-$80 a year ago but I guess the obaminations view of guns has caused even a run on these old rifles. I would say because ammo is cheap. Snipers run up to $500. You can find ex-snipers but you need to know what to look for.

A. The longer in the lemon juice the more the coin gets eaten away. Lemon juice is an acid. Personal coin or not, coins should be left alone and not cleaned. You are destroying a coin some person would love to have as a collectible, the Indian cent is a true American coin.

Q. How would someone with a serious mental illness be transported to the workhouse in 1891?
Asked by Teresa O - Mon Nov 5 05:43:55 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Most cities had an old "Asylum" on the outskirts. These were were the mentally ill stayed. In the 1800's...The old asylums had their own farms and land. The patients were put to work on the land as part of their therapy. The males usually looked after livestock, crops or gardens while the women were put to work in the sewing room. The produce was sold on and the old asylums became self sufficient. This all changed when the NHS felt that it was unjust to expect the ill to "work" and closed down the gardens and farms...sold off the land...then slowly but surely, closed all the old style hospitals. So now you have a lot of people in the community who are institutionalised not coping as the old hosptials on the out skirts offered support,… [cont.]

Jan 1, An office was opened on Ellis Island, New York, to cope with the vast flood of immigrants coming into the United States. Feb 7, US Great Blizzard of 1891 began. Apr 1, The London-Paris telephone connection opened. Mar 17, The British steamer Utopia sank off the coast of Gibraltar. Apr 1, Paul Gauguin (1848-1903), French painter, abandoned his wife and 5 children and left Marseille for Tahiti. Apr 11, A Jewish tailor's daughter (8) disappeared in Greece. A. The mint mark if any is on the back near the bow in the wreath. Seems the S for San Francisco is the scarcest and worth a dollar or so more. Values range from $11 in grade good up to $23 in extra fine grade and add a dollar or so if an S mint. There is however a rare O (New Orleans mint) mint mark variety, it is a O over a horizontal O values start at $60. Hope this helps.

Q. I'm remodeling my kitchen & in the process realized that I have great brick walls that were hiding underneath the drywall. I am removing one of the kitchen walls & opening it up into the dining room & was thinking of tearing 2 of the remaining 3 walls to expose the brick. I am installing new, shaker style white cabinets. What do you think? I thought it would add a unique design element...but others have said it is tacky? Need advice or please send photos.

A. Of course people(Women ) were afraid . The reason prostitutes kept plying their trade was abject poverty (in the jargon of the day they were referred to as unfortunates) Many were not prostitutes as we would know them today, just women who for the price of a nights lodgings, or for food in their bellies, or even for money for the price of a few gins would sell their bodies ,necessity forced many a poor soul into part time prostitution just to survive another miserable day It was a common sight to see dead bodies in the streets and alleyways of the East end of London(Whitechapel)( Spitalfields) dead of starvation The summer of 1888 was a severe one , low temperatures , snow fell in that summer and many of the poor ,and homeless died of… [cont.]

how much money is a 1891 mauser worth today?

Asked by joey - Tue May 19 21:56:10 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I own a Modelo 1893, manufactured in 1896, in 7X57mm (7mm Mauser) that is valued at $225.00 in its present condition. Yours is probably worth slightly more than that, unless it is in poor condition. If it is in mint condition it might be worth quite a bit more. The best thing to do is have it appraised by a competent firearms appraisal expert. If you are paying $70.00/box for ammo you are overpaying. Check here: Midway currently says they are in stock and available from $14.99 to $39.49 per box. Shoot straight and stay safe.
